I actually just realized: it doesn’t matter. The fact that we, reading the story, can’t tell if this is something that really happened is proof that this is something that could have happened, proof that Mori is someone Sarin would love, proof that Mori is worthy to be a character in the story.
Even if Mori is making everything up – even if she is writing a self-insert fanfic about the Dragon Doctors to replace an original character from another Dragon Doctors fanfic – that has no bearing on whether she is worth reading about. Harriet Vane – Lord Peter Wimsey’s love interest in Dorothy Sayers’ main series of mystery novels – is widely believed to be a self-insert character, but she’s no paper cutout or Mary Sue, and neither is Mori.
…. I think this is now another form of that meme where cute things causes heart attacks.
And considering this is Mori’s counter attack it’s all the better
So is this something that really happened that Mori is remembering, or is this a “memory” that she is creating from outside the story?
In this case I think it’s both

I think that correct answer to that question is “yes” :-).
Although if you want longer version, Packbat’s one is good. It doesn’t matter. It’s as real as the rest of Dragon Doctors.
