There’s a whole set of magic dedicated to names in this setting. I mentioned before that one way you can verify someone’s identity is with “namesight.” I haven’t elaborated on that since, but…maybe I’ll get to it.

That seems like an unnecessary bit of added cruelty. If everyone has lost the knowledge of the name, the guy with the wand could verify that by just asking his partner.
