Could go either way, really. I just looked up a story I remembered reading a while ago – “Winged Instruments” – where the protagonist is named Judith Asanti, has been turned male … and insists on keeping the name his parents gave him.
Huh, I’ll have to try reading that.
I’ve tried and I found that time is limited and I couldn’t continue without taking it with me like on a PDF or something like it, and my conscience kicked in on whether I wanted to copy and paste it in a file to read later so I just bookmarked it for later.
But ultimately I suppose name wise, your right, even now in this day and age we basically get whatever name we please and gender lines are being broken down in many areas.
I suppose Robert will be using Roberta as a first name now
