You know, it took me a *really* long time to figure out all the ideas behind this dialogue, but now that I’ve done it, I want to brag about it.
My first interpretation was that when Killi said ‘You’re dead’, she meant that he was doomed to die because the crax wouldn’t tolerate any further screw ups.
In retrospect, however, it seems clear that what she meant is that this is *not* the spirit of the crax she is talking to. It’s the *ghost* of Preston Chang, former animating mind of the Crax, who was removed from office for incompetence.
Took me forever to figure it out, but totally worth it.
Panel three reminds me of that one scene in New Doctor Who’s first season, final episode, while the Bad Wolf is vaporizing the Dalek Emperor, and he’s all like, “I will not die! I CANNOT dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”as he’s disintegrating.
I can’t remember if there was an alternate to this story, one where during Kili’s, Preston notices the change in Kili’s appearance.
Never mind, I found it!
But the one I was thinking had different dialogue, maybe I the one I’m thinking of was in the back of my imagination
