I once heard author Frederick Pohl give a talk about his work at the University of Auckland. In the Q&A afterwards, he was asked what made science fiction different from other literary genres. His response was that, in his opinion and unlike other genres, science fiction was fundamentally about change, and its effect — good and bad — on societies and individuals. That answer has always stuck with me.
